New Delhi: Former West Bengal governor Jagdeep Dhankhar has spent time in public office and is a legal luminary. Now, as the NDA’s vice-presidential candidate, the former Supreme Court counsel is a frontrunner for the respected post. We spoke to SK Narvar, Chairman, Capital India Corp, to know why he is the right choice for the V-P’s post.
Ques: Can you explain why PM Modi has chosen Dhankhar as the V-P candidate?
SKN: Dhankhar is a constitutional and legal expert with a long and clean stint in public life. As an eminent lawyer, he is known for his communication skills. Alongside being a lawyer at the Supreme Court, he has a rich stint in public life. Also, as a state governor, he has the right skill set to take on the more significant responsibility of the country’s Vice-President’s post. Dhankar’s experience and exposure to legal, public, and constitutional aspects will help him navigate the various issues before him in a neutral yet statesmanship manner.
Ques: What are the lessons for the ordinary person from Dhankhar’s nomination?
SKN: Dhankar comes from a very humble and rural background, yet he pursued his higher studies and became an eminent lawyer of the Supreme Court. Then he became a Central Minister and recently took on the role of the Governor. It is a lesson for us that India belongs to everyone and not just people from privileged backgrounds. Also, having long stints in public life in a selfless manner and without any charges of impropriety sets an excellent example of leadership and character.
Ques: Dhankar is from a rural background; what do you feel about it?
SKN: It gives me immense pride that someone from the rural background will occupy a prestigious and important constitutional post in this country. In the past, we had illustrious leaders who came from rural backgrounds; hence, it is a matter of immense joy and celebration.
Ques: What is your message for Dhankar as he runs for this post?
SKN: As a fellow citizen, I am proud, and like many Indians, my best wishes are with him. Besides this, I would like to share honourable PM Modiji’s tweet, ‘Kisan Putra Jagdeep Dhankhar is known for his humility. He brings with him an illustrious legal, legislative, and gubernatorial career. He has always worked for the well-being of farmers, youth, women and the marginalised. Glad that he will be our VP candidate.”
